So here is a clock that is somewhat of a curiosity. This is a 30 Hr wooden works clock made by Jonathan Frost, Reading, Mass. The case is missing the door, but came with the original signed dial. The main portion of the case would be considered a reverse Ogee style. However the top is very puzzling. There is no evidence that this clock ever had normal capitals with returns on the side. The finish on this unique top appears to have about the same vintage crud on the surface as the lower portion of the case. The top has a pine base that is covered with mahogany (?) veneer. These factors lend to this top being original to the clock. However, the top piece has veneer on both the front and back side of the wood, which is not characteristic of clock making of the 1840’s. Also the screws used to hold the top piece in do not appear to be from the 1840’s.
My summation on this top is that it was probably added to the clock perhaps 100 years ago. I intend to leave it on when I restore it as it hs now become part of the heritage of this clock. Restoration of this clock is down the road.
