William S. Johnson Clocks; New York, N.Y. 8 Day Miniature Column Clock; circa 1850-1860
Here is a wonderful little clock made by William S. Johnson. New York. It is a miniature Column Clock. Purchased off ebay I received the case only. Then the hunt began for a suitable 8 day spring driven movement and dial. In time, these were obtained as well. The case was cleaned up using straight denatured alcohol and a scrubber, followed up with Behlen’s wool lube applied to 0000 Steel Wool. I first tried gojo and 0000 but this just did not do the job. The columns were cleaned up using cotton swabs dipped in denatured alcohol. A little time consuming, but worth the effort
Note where the makers name shows up on the label. It is up so high, this label must have been designed for an ogee clock
Here is the William S Johnson clock with restoration complete. The original label is worth commenting on. It appears to be a label sized more for an ogee clock as the makers name is so high up, it is covered by the movement.
